  • Smart Sustainable Resources (SSR-UPC)

The aim of the CER Smart Sustainable Resources is to create, innovate and transfer knowledge in the field of natural resources, and of urban, industrial and mining waste, through technologies for the location, processing, optimization and reuse of these resources. It is intended to attack a field with more than traditional roots but which has recently become an emerging area with a notable increase in activity at a global level, defined holistically around resources and waste (considered also as a new source of mineral resources ), approaching his study from a multidisciplinary perspective, which includes:

    • Mining exploration and exploitation using advanced techniques,
    • The analysis and physical, chemical and biological treatment of resources and the waste generated during their use,
    • The use of information and communications technologies for the collection and interpretation of information, through sensors, communications networks and data processing systems,
    • The transfer of knowledge to the company and society in general.

It is a Specific Research Center (CER) that belongs to the TECNIO network of the Generalitat de Catalunya and is made up of members from the different sections and areas that make up EMIT.

The research of the CER is aligned with the new paradigm of the use of natural resources in the context of the circular economy. To achieve these objectives, the researchers who make up the CER have advanced knowledge in different aspects such as the location and characterization of mineral deposits, the efficient use of these resources, the use of enabling technologies such as biotechnology for utilization of all types of resources (mineral, industrial and urban), and the application of advanced monitoring and data processing systems to guarantee an efficient, sustainable and intelligent use of natural resources.

The Specific Research Center (CER) in Supervision, Security and Automatic Control (CS2AC-UPC) is a multidisciplinary group of professors from the  Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) - Barcelona Tech - and researchers from the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial (CSIC-UPC) dedicated to the wide world of automatic control and system supervision.

The emergence of new technologies (5G, IoT, Virtualization of Networks and Services, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality, Machine Learning, Smart Cities, etc.) pose new challenges, which require larger research structures than which have traditionally worked so far. The CCABA has evolved into a structure that can group in a single CER researchers, from the different UPC research groups, in the different technologies that are being developed under the generic name of Next Generation of Communications Networks and Services (NGNS).
